…and fellow rancher with 20+ years of experience living and breathing these techniques. I grew up around the oil places in Northern Alberta. But after spending summers on farms with family, I knew ranching was for me. I started my ranching journey in 2000 in Athabasca, Alberta, Canada. I started small, with 40 cows on a 380-acre farm.

I’ve learned a lot from programs like Holistic Resource Management and Ranching for Profit. I even tried having different animals like hogs, horses, sheep, cattle, and turkeys all grazing together! I grew my ranch, using 5500 acres and caring for 3000 yearlings. Now, I help manage ranches for others. Just Like you, I’ve had hard times on my ranch. Long days, bad weather, and trying to save money while doing good work. I used to wonder how to make things better now and for the future. I would recommend Ranching Like A 12-Year-Old to anyone involved with grazing livestock. Tom clearly and persuasively lays out the method of and motivation for his is grazing management. The motivation is to produce as much high quality forage as possible, both during the growing season and to stockpile for winter grazing. The method he describes with enough details to give you confidence to do it yourself and without overwhelming you with too much information. Having spent my last three years managing cattle with good-but-not-great results, I am excited to use Ranching Like A 12-Year-Old as a practical guide to improving our farm.
